Water test strips wasn't always used to test the chemical levels in pools and spas. In the olden days, pool or spa owners were instructed to bring a small bottle's measurement to their pool, spa or chemical dealers. In that establishment, the water will be tested. A printed out result will then be given to the client. This is great but let's admit it, we do not have all the time in the world to spend for going back and forth just to be able to test our chemical levels. The funny thing is that it is necessary to test the water every single day. Who has the time to even do that right? I'm sure every pool or spa owner can agree to that predicament.
Hence, the water test strips were made to make a pool and spa owner's life easier. These were made to test your water's chemical levels. SO HOW DO YOU USE IT?
Note: Make sure to buy your water test strips first.
1. Talk to a personnel where you bought your them. These have been made by various companies and dealers. Be certain that you are made familiar to its specification.
2. Read the instructions on the back of the container. You should also have a manual with you. This manual or booklet will tell you how to alter your chemical levels.
3. Take a strip and dip it into the water. Make sure that the strip is fully submerged when you do this. Dipping only a part of it will prove ineffective.
4. Let the it stay in the water for about 5-10 seconds. This will give the strip the opportunity to obtain accurate readings. After the said time, take it out of the water and do one firm shake to get rid of the excess water.
5. Compare the colors with the colors that are imprinted on the back of the packaging. This is the most important part. This will give you the results that you need to adjust your pool or spa's chemicals so make sure that you read the upshot correctly.

GREEN ALGAE
This is the easiest algae type to get rid of.
How to get rid of it:
• Make sure that your pH level is kept in 7.2 - 7.6. You can properly assess this by using your water test strips. Use pH increaser or decreaser to adjust levels.
• Deposit algaecide on your pool and let it circulate for 24 hours.
• The next day, brush and vacuum your pool.
• Turn your filter on and let it run for 24 hours.
• If algae still persist, repeat all steps for a second time.
BLACK and MUSTARD ALGAE
Black and green algae are very dangerous. Black algae is very easy to spot while mustard can be harder to see especially if you are using yellow or mustard colored granite stones for your pool walls and floor. Otherwise, mustard algae may look like yellow sand that is are either suspended on the pool floor or growing on the pool walls.
How to get rid of it:
• Make sure that your pH level is kept at 7.2 - 7.6. You can properly assess this by using your water test strips. Use pH increaser or decreaser to adjust levels.
• Deposit algaecide on your pool and let it circulate for 24 hours. (Black and mustard may require a special kind of algaecide. Just ask your local home depot about it. This product is usually readily available.)
• The next day, brush and vacuum your pool.
• Turn your filter on and let it run for 24 hours.
• Back wash your filter to get rid of much debris as possible.
• If algae still persist, repeat all steps for a second time.
• If the issue still persists, opt to drain all your pool water and chemical wash your pool with 2-3 gallons of quality muriatic acid.
