Salt Water Swimming Pools Are Sources of Comfort and Refreshing Environment

!±8± Salt Water Swimming Pools Are Sources of Comfort and Refreshing Environment

If you are planning on constructing a swimming pool, instead of going with the conventional types of it, check out what saltwater types of swimming pools have in store for you. This type is not only popular because of its distinct design and the unique use of saltwater on swimming pools, it is also famous for being a pool that is environment friendly and a safer version of our traditional pools.

Saltwater swimming pools and the use of saltwater chlorination originated in Australia where it is famous as a method of disinfecting water without using chemical on large quantities. The cost of chemical products when totaled for the whole year can break the bank as regular chemical consumption is based on the size of the pool. So basically, the larger the pool is, the more chemicals are needed which will mean a significant increase in your expenses. Contrary to that, saltwater pools can greatly minimize your expenses on chemical usage and when summed up and compared with conventional swimming pools, the process of saltwater chlorination and its design proves to be much more affordable in the long run.

Basically, installing a new saltwater swimming pool is the only expensive part of owning this type and distinct water system. Most owners of these types find themselves enjoying not only the relaxation, comfort and the healthy pool experience, they are also happy with the large amount they get to save by cutting the total chemical consumption into less than a half of what conventional swimming pools use in order to acquire and maintain a clean, clear and disinfected water. Imagine how much you can save after several years of not using too much chemicals on your pool.

Unlike the conventional pools that use many different types of chemical products to disinfect swimming pools and most importantly its water, saltwater pools instead use the process of saltwater chlorination in order to fend off the harmful microorganisms and bacteria present on pool waters. This process uses dissolved salt for its chlorination system to be broken down by electrolysis in order to achieve the chemical reaction to produce certain agents responsible for keeping your pool water safe.

This type of pool also offers a comfortable experience as swimmers will not have any type of skin and eye irritations as chloramines are not present on saltwater pools. Chloramines are what cause irritations commonly produced by chemicals used on pool waters. These irritants are also responsible for the caustic smell and the burning eyes experience on conventional pools especially when larger quantities of chemicals are used on these swimming pools. The saltwater chlorination and its electrolysis process breaks and eliminate chloramines during the whole process that is why these types of pools usually lack these elements on their water. In addition to that, salt on water is softer than chemicals on the skin which makes any swimming experience pleasurable and relaxing as well. Saltwater chlorination makes up for the little regular consumption of chemicals on this type of swimming pool.

Chemical Free Swimming Pools

!±8± Chemical Free Swimming Pools

The chemical chlorine is the most widely used and effective method of sanitizing a swimming pool or spa. Typically a pool owner must buy, transport, store and handle the caustic chemical during the water treatment process, and the presence of the chemical in the water often causes problems for swimmers. There are several alternatives available today to the traditional routine of pool maintenance that may also improve water quality for the people that use the pool. The use of a chlorine generator eliminates the need for handling chlorine in its hazardous form.

A chlorine generating device produces chlorine by using low-voltage electrolysis of dissolved salts in the water via an electrode unit installed in the pool's plumbing. This small electric current breaks water down into its basic components: hydrogen and oxygen. Common chlorine is generated when granulated salt is added to the mix. Two popular brands of chlorine generators are AquaRite and Intex.

There are two types of chlorine generators in use in residential swimming pools: the brine unit and a unit that requires salt to be added directly to the water. The brine unit has a chlorine generating unit that is usually located in the pool equipment area. The brine unit relies on brine blocks, which are housed in the chlorine producing cell. The produced chlorine is injected directly into the pool. The brine units are less commonly used than the alternative design, because they tend to be messy and produce undesirable by-products.

The second type of unit, the type requiring that salt be added directly to the pool water, is more commonly used. There are two versions of this unit, differing only in installation location of the components.

Chlorine generators have clear benefits. Since the best units require that the pool's pump runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they produce chlorine constantly. This constant addition of chlorine into the water prevents the build-up of algae and waterline scum. Eliminating the necessity of buying and handling hazardous chlorine chemicals is a bonus. The pool water feels smooth; many people compare swimming in a pool equipped with a chlorine generator to taking a shower in soft water. The cost of generating chlorine is lower than purchasing it.

No pool is without maintenance and there are, of course, drawbacks to using a chlorine generator. Obviously, the water is still chlorinated, so swimmers will experience all of the problems typically associated with swimming in chlorinated water including dry skin, irritated eyes, discolored hair and damaged swimming suits. Chlorine generators tend to produce by-products that raise the pH of the pool water to a level which renders chlorine ineffective as a sanitizer. The pH of the pool must be carefully monitored, and hydrochloric acid is typically added to the water to lower the pH. Handling and storing hydrochloric acid is as undesirable as handling and storing chlorine.

The bottom line is that while chlorine generators may produce swimming water with a more pleasant quality and may eliminate the need for handling chlorine, these generators are a new way of using chlorine to sanitize water, not an alternative to it.
